Heating and Air PDF Print E-mail

Heating and air questions had come up during the choosing of the options for our new home. Below are some of the question I had when trying to make some decisions about upgrading the HVAC system.

Q. Should I use a 80% or higher efficiency furnace?

"Dayton Power and Light" gives the following information for efficiency costs. This is based on a 2200 sq. ft. house
- 80% eff. has an annual cost of $1109
- 92% eff. has an annual cost of $1053

Q. Do I have enough BTU to handle the house?

DP&L suggests 40 B.T.U.s per square foot of house.

Q. Do I have any say in where the condenser unit is placed?

Yes, you should, to a point. Placement is dictated, in many cases, by the climate. You may be forced to have your unit mounted in that seems strange. Proper ventilation can force the unit to certain locations. The one thing that I would keep in mind is make sure that the unit is on the side of the house and not next to a primary living space (i.e. family room). These units can be noisy and having it in the back just messes up the bar-b-que. Having it next to the family room forces you to run the T.V. at a higher volume (to some this is good).
