Construction Tips
  • DOCUMENT ALL CONVERSATIONS. It is very wise to document all the conversations that you have with your builder. This is to protect you against miscommunication or misinterpretation of option/request that you have mad of the builder.
  • GO SEE THE HOUSE EVERY DAY! I can not stress this enough. If there is something wrong it is best to catch it early on. Plus once certain phases start you can not see the goofs. If your builder has a policy that the sales representative must accompany you when viewing your home, make a standing appointment for them to meet you at the construction site.
  • DON'T HESITATE POINTING OUT PROBLEMS. If you think something is wrong point it out. Even if you are not sure it's really a problem, point it out. It is better to be safe then sorry.
  • ASK QUESTIONS. This goes hand-in-hand with the previous tip. If something looks wrong don't be afraid to ask! Evan if it is correct, it helps put your mind at ease. Ask questions concerning codes. Sometimes a particular way the builder did something looks strange but it is done because of local codes.
  • GET TO KNOW THE SUPERVISOR/FOREMAN. A good working relationship with the person who is supervising the construction is helpful in case of problems. If you can work him/her in a non adversarial way then they will go the extra mile for you. They really should be going that mile anyway but a bad relationship is going to shorten it considerably.
  • TAKE PICTURES. This is something that you will really enjoy later and it is nice to share with other friends and family. Seeing how you are there every day, this is an easy one to do.
  • DOCUMENT THE WIRING/PLUMBING. After the wiring and plumbing has been inspected and before the drywall goes up take a video camera and shoot all the wiring and pipes throughout the house. This could come in handy incase there is a problems down the road. It could save a contractor some time and unnecessary holes in the wall.
